Should discussion about questions be in the comments or the answer fields?

I raised this on twitter and am moving the conversation here.

There is sometimes a lot of discussion that goes into answering the questions on this site. Should this discussion be in underaken in the answer fields or in the comments?

I tend to think that it should be in the comments and that the answer fields should be reserved for actually answering the questions (with background discussion in there also if needed).

I agree with your own answer Euan: "I tend to think that it should be in the comments and that the answer fields should be reserved for actually answering the questions (with background discussion in there also if needed)" and apologise because I answered one of your other Qs when perhaps I should have commented on the question.

Though, I must admit, I'm pretty confused about whether this itself should be an answer or a comment! The distinction will never be 100% clear, we're a small community, so I suggest we give each other a little lee-way too.
I'm also confused. I say make your comment an answer and I'll mark it as answered.

In answer, I agree with this part of the question: "I tend to think that it should be in the comments and that the answer fields should be reserved for actually answering the questions (with background discussion in there also if needed)". (see comments above)
